Ramadan is a special religious holiday for Muslims around the world, and especially in the UAE. During this period, believers devote themselves to prayer, renounce worldly pleasures and spend time with family and loved ones.
The holy month begins on the first day of the new moon in the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and lasts for 29 or 30 days, depending on the lunar cycle. In 2024, the beginning of this period falls on March 11.
In Arab countries, Ramadan is celebrated with special grandeur and reverence. During this time, Muslims observe a strict fast from dawn to dusk, abstaining from food, drink, smoking and listening to music. After sunset and prayers, families and friends gather together for iftar to end the day’s fast by enjoying a large meal.
This holiday inspires acts of charity, as it is customary to generously share with those in need. Many mosques and organisations offer assistance in the form of clothing, food and other necessities throughout the month. Believers also help by donating food/clothing or giving a portion of their wealth to the poor.
Ramadan is a time of spiritual renewal. During this month, Muslims are especially focused on faith, family and charity. Customs and traditions not only create a special atmosphere, but also unite the Muslim community in devotion to their faith and solidarity with each other.
