Masdar City or ‘Source City’ is one of the most sustainable eco-urban areas located 17 km east-south-east of Abu Dhabi, beside Abu Dhabi International Airport. Started in 2008 Masdar aims to leave a “green print”, an example, of how cities can support rapid urbanization and at the same time drastically reduce energy, water, and waste consumption.
With the total area of 6 sq.km, it consists of a clean-tech cluster, a business free zone, and a residential neighborhood with such amenities as restaurants, shops, and public green spaces.
Designed by the British architectural firm Foster and Partners, the city relies on solar energy and other renewable energy sources. The first company that opened its doors in September 2010 was the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology.
